Staten Island East Shore
The 5-mile waterfront on Staten Island’s East Shore has been a destination for beachfront recreation for almost a century, resulting in a rich network of City and Federal parks and open spaces. Historically susceptible to storm surges, the parkland and adjacent residential neighborhoods along East Shore saw some of the most extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Working for NYC Parks and in conjunction with other city agencies, QRP performed extensive site analysis, data gathering and designing elements that will help improve the use of this valuable beachfront and its important connections to the community.
QRP studied the protection plans prepared by the US Army Corp of Engineers and developed innovative ways to integrate this storm barrier into the park landscape. Preservation of natural areas with rich habitat and unique plant resources, a variety of recreational uses, attractive landscapes, resiliency and improved public access were some of the drivers of this project.
