Sara D. Roosevelt Park
One of the largest green spaces in Lower Manhattan, Sara D Roosevelt Park (SDR Park) is a beloved community park providing a variety of active, passive and cultural uses to the neighborhood. The park dates to the early Robert Moses era, and it is considered an NYC Parks Legacy Park. This project will reconstruct a two-block section of the park between Grand and Delancey Streets.
The work includes improvements to the heavily used Grand Street entrance and the through-block connection at Broome Street, as well as reconstruction of the synthetic turf field, multipurpose court, peripheral pathways, gardens and adjacent sidewalks and existing bike lanes. Working closely with NYC Parks, QRP is leading a team of civil, electrical, structural and environmental engineers to revitalize the dilapidated, Moses-era park into a refreshing new space, while preserving and complementing the park’s design legacy.
QRP began with a detailed site analysis to inform and anticipate various design and permitting issues. From pavements to site furnishings and planting to universal design access, the park needed complete reconstruction. Several community input meetings and tabling sessions were held to gather input from the diverse community which spans both Chinatown and the Lower East Side. There were strong and competing opinions on the proposed reconstruction - on one side a desire for peaceful sitting areas, gardens and community spaces, and on the other for active sports uses.
