Sarah Lawrence College Campus-Wide Improvements
The 40+-acre Sarah Lawrence College has long enjoyed a reputation as a prestigious educational institution, nestled into a wooded setting with dramatic rock outcrops and surrounded by the leafy Bronxville suburban community. QRP has assisted a 34-year collaboration with the College designing a series of campus projects to improve pedestrian and vehicular circulation and create some of the College’s signature outdoor spaces. QRP also designed unique identity signage for the campus main entrance. Many of the improvements have been aimed at improving pedestrian safety and clarifying paths of travel.
With a desire to preserve the character and connectivity of the campus, Sarah Lawrence College also retained QRP to help identify under-preforming, non-functioning features on campus as well as character-defining natural features and historic remnants with the potential for future design development. QRP’s campus-wide landscape master plan focused on restoring landscape integrity by re-establishing a compelling overall campus structure.
Student use, service access, landscape restoration, incorporation of new campus building and development sites, increased ADA accessibility, and campus maintenance were considered as the coordinated parts necessary to create a functioning whole. QRP’s plan presented campus-wide solutions for safer and ADA accessible pedestrian circulation, landscape and garden restoration, right-sizing of roadways, sidewalks and pathways. while respecting the rugged landscape, rock outcrops and maintenance needs of the campus as a whole. The plan identified a cohesive palette of materials for an enduring and sustainable campus landscape.
