Rockaway Gateway Plaza & Performance Space
This project created a new performance venue that also serves as a major gateway to Rockaway Beach.
The community requested an iconic structure that would be a visible gateway to the boardwalk, with a design that allowed for a wide variety of events and would function a shade element during non-event periods.
Working with Sage & Coombe Architects the unique new structure is reminiscent of clam shells or sails, providing beachfront character that will provide shade not only for the performers but also for spectators. The design takes advantage of existing terraced seating that provides boardwalk access and a gathering space to view performances.
The structure consists of three arched roofs of different sizes that overlap to form a large, shaded area over the stage and plaza. The tallest arch reaches 36’ above the plaza. The shaded plaza below has become an inviting and flexible space for community events of many kinds.
